President Donald Trump is calling for a major audit of the nation’s immigration system.
Trump made the comments during a Thursday speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland.
“We have got to audit our borders,” Trump said, referring to his administration’s border wall proposal.
“It’s got to be audited, and I will do it right away.”
The comments come amid mounting criticism of Trump’s immigration policy and amid a flurry of recent deportations of immigrants who crossed the border illegally.
The president’s administration announced Thursday it was seeking to resettle 10,000 more migrants and refugees across the border.
Trump has repeatedly cited a 2016 Pew Research Center report that found more than 1.5 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.K. in fiscal 2017.
In his speech, Trump cited the 2016 Pew report, saying, “It is a disgrace that our country cannot secure its borders, and it is time to do something about it.”
The Pew report said nearly one-third of all undocumented immigrants in the United States live in communities where their families are at risk of being deported.
“A major audit would give us a chance to see where we’re going wrong, to see what we’re doing right,” Trump told the CPAC audience.
“And I can guarantee you that we will find ways to make it better.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Trump administration has been trying to find ways around a number of legal immigration rules that restrict the number of immigrants and refugees who can be resettled in the country.
In the case of the border wall, the administration says it is not willing to build the wall until it has completed a study to determine how many of the immigrants and refugee could be successfully integrated into U.M.B.D. The White Street Journal reported Thursday that the administration has not yet determined how many immigrants and border crossers would be allowed into the country through a study.
That would require a major review of the current immigration system, the newspaper reported.
The Wall Street Journal said that the review could include a detailed review of border security.
“But it also will include a series of recommendations to help guide our nation’s border security,” the report said.
The report did not specify how many people would be affected by the study.
“This study could help guide the administration’s response to the growing demand for housing and services across the country,” the newspaper said.
“The results could also help guide what policies we should pursue to secure the border and ensure that the American people, not corporate interests, can prosper in our country.”
